ACA Policy

Carbon Reduction Policy Commitment

The Charlottetown Airport Authority (CAA) recognizes the effects that airport activities and associated carbon emission have on the environment and we want to do our part in helping to reduce these impacts. In 2018 CAA started partaking in the International Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, which promotes environmental efficiently and carbon reduction. The program was put into place to manage, reduce, and ultimately neutralize Charlottetown Airport’s carbon footprint through six levels.

Using 2017 as the base year, the first level of the program was to monitor base level carbon emissions from airport controlled sources over several years. The second level is achieved once a reduction in emissions is evident over sequential years and a Carbon Management Plan (CMP) is created, which involves implementing carbon management strategies and setting targets for carbon reductions. The third level of the program involves extending the scope of emissions to include tenant and public emissions within the airport property and involving tenants and the public in the CMP. Level 3 + of the ACA program is neutrality, which involves implementing strategies to offset the carbon emissions from the airport that could not be reduced in previous levels. This level will take the longest period of time and will most likely require involvement from external help.

It is CAA’s goal to follow the approximate timeline below:

Level 1 Certification (Monitoring): Achieved in 2018

Level 2 Certification (Reduction): Achieved in 2021

Level 3 Certification (Optimisation): Achieved in 2023

Level 3+ Certification (Neutrality): To be determined

To ensure the effectiveness of this policy, CAA will track annual greenhouse gas emissions, implement carbon reduction initiatives wherever feasible, and report annually to the ACA to maintain certification. The goals of this policy are fully supported by CAA CEO who will review the policy on a regular basis and ensures full co-operation at all times.
