Charlottetown, PE – The Charlottetown Airport Authority is thrilled to announce a historic milestone as passenger numbers soared to unprecedented heights this summer. With a resounding vote of confidence from travellers and our airline partners, YYG Charlottetown Airport experienced an exceptional surge in passenger traffic, underscoring its position as a premier travel hub in the region.
Key Highlights:
- Record Passenger Numbers: From June to September, YYG Charlottetown Airport recorded a remarkable 220,489 passengers passing through its terminal building. This achievement marks a 7.2% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, and an 11.2% increase over 2019, demonstrating the resilience and appeal of our airport. Year-to-date traffic numbers are 19.5% ahead of 2022 and the Authority is projecting that final numbers for 2023 will exceed the record year of 2019.
- Airlines and Routes Expansion: The impressive growth can be attributed to the unwavering commitment of our airline partners. This summer, we had a record five airlines operating flights to seven airports from YYG, offering passengers a wider range of choices and destinations.
- Enhanced Facilities: The Charlottetown Airport Authority continues to invest in enhancing the passenger experience. Recent upgrades to the terminal facilities with new signage and wayfinding, the expansion of our outdoor boarding lounge, “The Dock”, and enhanced amenities, have contributed to increased passenger satisfaction and choice.
- New Indigenous Welcome: In partnership with L’nuey, Prince Edward Island’s Mi’kmaq Rights Initiative, the Charlottetown Airport Authority unveiled a new Indigenous welcome piece in the arrivals area of YYG Charlottetown Airport. The artwork was commissioned by PEI Mi’kmaq artist Koady Sock and the Made in Mi’kma’ki team.
- Environmental Responsibility: YYG remains committed to sustainability initiatives, recently achieving Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation for the first time. This was achieved by continuing to implement a series of initiatives to decrease our carbon footprint per passenger.
Doug Newson, CEO, expressed delight at this milestone, stating, “We are thrilled to see such strong growth in passenger numbers. It reflects the confidence passengers have in YYG as a reliable and welcoming gateway to Prince Edward Island. Our entire team, together with our airline partners, has worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless and enjoyable travel experience for all.”
The Airport Authority extends its sincere appreciation to passengers, airline partners, and dedicated airport staff for their role in achieving this record-breaking accomplishment. As we continue to adapt and innovate, YYG Charlottetown Airport remains committed to delivering an exceptional Island experience in a convenient, modern, and sustainable airport for all passengers to enjoy.
As the airlines near the end of their summer flight schedule season, the Airport Authority is pleased to share details of what’s in store this winter from YYG. This winter will see an increase in seat capacity over last year, as Air Canada operates larger aircraft, and we welcome Porter Airlines for the first time ever during a winter season.
